Introduction: The Meteorological Third Generation Imaging satellite, MTG-I1 satellite, launched on December 13, 2022, promises a groundbreaking era in weather forecasting. Then, as it undergoes rigorous testing and validation, expectations are high for this satellite to revolutionize our understanding of Earth’s climate and weather events.

MTG-I1’s Enhanced Imaging Capabilities: MTG-I1’s key feature is its ability to produce images every 10 minutes, providing unprecedented detail in cloud structures. This high-resolution imagery equips meteorologists with the tools to detect and predict severe weather events faster and more accurately than ever before. The satellite’s design, deviating from its predecessors, employs a three-axis stabilized platform, allowing continuous observation of Earth’s disc.

Nowcasting for Rapid Weather Phenomena: The Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) system introduces the concept of ‘nowcasting,’ enabling real-time monitoring and prediction of rapidly evolving weather phenomena. In fact, this includes early detection of severe thunderstorms, enhancing the reaction time for issuing warnings and implementing necessary measures.

EHP’ Vital Contribution: EHP proudly played a pivotal role in the development of MTG-I1 satellite. EHP supplied 100% of the 50 heat pipes for this satellite, showcasing their commitment to advancing space technology. Additionally, for the MTG-S sounding satellite, EHP contributed another 100% of the heat pipes, demonstrating their crucial role in ensuring the thermal stability of the mission.

MTG System Overview: The MTG system, comprising six satellites, ensures more than two decades of operational life. Thales Alenia Space, in collaboration with major partner OHB, leads the industrial consortium responsible for building the MTG family. The system includes two types of satellites: MTG-I (Imaging) and MTG-S (Sounding), each serving distinct purposes.

Beyond Weather Forecasting: The MTG system extends beyond weather forecasting, contributing to climate records and providing essential observations for various sectors. It is the first geostationary weather satellite capable of detecting lightning data over specific regions, allowing for comprehensive tracking of storm lifecycles.

Climate Records and Essential Products: MTG’s commitment to climate studies is evident in its decades-long mission, ensuring continuity of geostationary data for future research. Then, beyond weather forecasting, observations from MTG satellites will support diverse applications, including firefighting, air quality forecasts, air traffic control, search and rescue missions, disaster risk reduction, agricultural productivity, marine and coastal management, and sustainable energy production.
